Bill during the Iliad Bookshop move in 2006

Bill during the Iliad Bookshop move in 2006

We were very sorry to learn this week of the passing of our colleague, former employee and friend Bill Tunilla. For more than 20 years Bill ran the House of Fiction Bookshop in Pasadena before joining Iliad’s staff in 2001. Bill had been a film editor prior to becoming a bookseller, but books were in his blood and House of Fiction was a popular gathering place for Southern California’s literati. Bill left Iliad in 2007 due to illness, and he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, June 16, 2009. Bill was a baseball and Civil War fan, he loved cats and books, and he possessed a sly wit and sharp mind.

He’ll be very much missed in the Los Angeles book community.

Iliad’s growing!

May 23rd, 2009

We’ve just acquired another 3,000 square feet (just to the north of our existing store), and we’re expanding! Here’s how it looks right now:

As you can see, it’s just a big empty space right now, but three weeks ago it didn’t even look this good! We’ve made a lot of progress already, and are about to lay a gorgeous real wood floor (like the floor in our current store, but a different wood). Once the walls have been painted and the floor finished, we’ll start building fixtures and shelves, and finally two doorways into the current store. By August we hope to announce our grand reopening, at double our current size! Stay tuned.

More kudos for Iliad’s staff!

We now interrupt the usual mentions of new books and/or Zola to announce that our own Lisa Morton has just received a Bram Stoker award nomination in the category of Superior Achievement in Non-fiction (for her book A Hallowe’en Anthology):

Blogging about Iliad

December 20th, 2008

Here’s a shout-out to one of Iliad’s regulars, Max, who has moved up to Oregon but is still kind enough to mention us in his great blog:

Max’s list of 5 books that changed his life is fascinating, too. Thanks, Max!

New Film section

December 10th, 2008

We’ve just added a new section to our website’s shopping cart for Film books. Right now the section emphasizes technical film books and screenwriting books, but since film is one of our specialties here we plan on adding and expanding to this area on the website over time.

We’re also adding to the “Miscellaneous” section of the website, and started with a book on Bigfoot:

New history books

November 1st, 2008

We just bought an amazing collection of books on military history and Napoleon, so I’ve added a “History” section to the books for sale on our website. These Napoleon books are absolutely stunning. If you have any interest in Napoleonic history, please take a look! Thanks.
