Description
This single page letter bears the return address of Windsor, Vermont, where Salinger received his mail during the time he resided in Cornish, New Hampshire. Although the date is partly missing, the letter was found among a collection dating back to the mid-1950s. The letter reads: ‘Dear Mrs. __, Thanks so much for your nice letter. I’m very glad you and your husband look on The Catcher so favorably, and I’m grateful, too, for the amusing running commentary. Many thanks. J. D. Salinger’. The letter had some severe edge wear and staining, but has now been preserved by mounting on archival paper (the mounting process did cause some of the ink to blur slightly). The letter is presented in a lovely custom-made folio, bound in full red morocco with the title ‘J. D. Saliinger Manuscript’ stamped on the spine, and interior flaps covered in black cloth and marbled paper. There is a faint double stamp on the spine, per binder’s error. A very scarce and very kind handwritten note from one of the most important literary figures of the 20th century.
